Welcome to the website of TC Public Space!

TCPS is a student run newsprint publication and official Teachers College student organization. Though this is a student run paper, it is not just for students. Our purpose is to create public space within the Teachers College community, by providing a space in which all community members, students, professors, administrators, support staff, service providers, alumni, have a place to speak and listen to each other.

Our conception of public space is that it is open and contested. It is a place where all voices are welcome and if it is a healthy space, all voices are listened to and heard. It is a place where debate, criticism, and dissent occur. It is place where meeting, sharing, learning, relating, and consensus happen. By being an open venue for reflection, public space is a catalyst to change and an invitation to appreciation. It is our hope that TC Public Space will live up to its namesake. We envision this paper uniting members of the TC community by empowering them to form relationships and to think and act together.

We understand public space and education to be inseparable. As crucial as community is to education, public space is to community. Teachers College is an institution. It is populated with hardworking and busy people, friends, strangers, new and old. It is a community with wide and varied commitments and interests, explored via many different departments. But we all go to Teachers College. We hope this paper creates a space for us to step back from our singular pursuits to come together to share, to question, to wonder, to explore.

This paper will operate in a straightforward way. Any member of the TC community interested in sharing words or visual media should submit to tcpublicspace@gmail.com. Articles will be reviewed first by Senior Editors and, if selected, reviewed by a copy editor for simple revision. We don’t intend to edit ideas or content, we just want to ensure that articles read well. A proof-read article will be sent back to the author for final approval before publishing.
